Uruguay:
perhaps one of the smaller countries of South America, but it`s certainly big-hearted when it comes to attractions. It contains one of South America`s most interesting capitals, charming colonial towns, the hilly interior and a cluster of internationally renowned beach resorts. Uruguay is an amazing country, rich in the wealth of centuries old traditions, populated with warm, friendly people, and possessing some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. And if you love sunsets, you`ll never want to leave. The western coast of Uruguay is renowned as the `Riviera` of South America. Uruguay draws more visitors per capita than any other South American state. Its 500 km coastline is one long white sandy beach, occasionally interrupted by dunes, pine, acacia and eucalyptus trees. Summer resorts and towns are dotted all along its coast, starting in the east with the charming colonial town of Colonia del Sacramento, just south of Carmelo, followed by the beaches of Montevideo, Atlántida, Solis, Piriápolis, Portezuelo and Punta del Este, jewel of the Atlantic Ocean and Rio de la Plata. Continuing further east lie the tranquil resort towns of La Paloma, La Pedrera and La Coronilla. Uruguay is renowned for its colonial towns and fortresses, its natural forestry resources, its hot water springs, and its art, cinema and jazz festivals. Montevideo, the southernmost capital on the continent, is home to half the country`s population. European immigrants, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, and British, influenced the city`s architecture, and a walk around the capital reveals architectural styles ranging from colonial to Art Deco. Indeed, the richness of Montevideo`s architecture is unrivalled in South America. A walk along La Rambla, stretching from the Old City to the neighborhood of Carrasco, takes you along the riverfront past fishermen and their catch to parks and gardens where children play and elders sip mate. Restaurants, cafes, bars, and street performers populate the port area, where you will also discover the flavours of Uruguay at the afternoon and weekend Mercado del Puerto, or Port Market. Many of the city`s historic sites surround Plaza Independencia. Soccer is a national obsession; it traverses all walks of life and social position. Throughout Uruguay, you can always find a field or street with youngsters playing. Centuries old, Uruguay has architecture and customs dating back to colonial times. The interior rolling grasslands still contain the domains of the gaucho, and the coastline boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
